A year of stories 41/52

After you read our story, don’t forget to check out the entire circle, starting with the Tess Runion‘s gorgeous fall weekend!

It’s not unusual to experience canon fire in our home (we live on an artillery post and across the street from a parade field),
but to experience it directly in front of our door for 2 days straight means it’s Frontier Days weekend.

Even though we knew it was going to happen all weekend, we jumped every single time it fired (sometimes, there was even a yelpy scream from one of the kids).

It sounds awful, but the canon fire was fun and it was awesome to
watch all of the neighborhood kids walking around and soaking in all of the history.
Their favorite place was the laundry station – I wish they got this excited about laundry in our home!

H’s least favorite place was the medical tent.
He ran home green saying he needed to rest before continuing and that he couldn’t go back to that station again.
I thought he was overreacting until I saw it.  I’m with him!

By the end of the weekend, they had walked the quad several times, watching the demonstrations over and over.

We soon learned exactly what was said just before the blast and prepared accordingly.

The weekend ended with an historic baseball game between the Army and Fort Sill teams.

And that wraps up Frontier Days …. until next year.

After you read my weekly story, don’t forget to check out the rest of the circle,
starting with one of my favorite photographers, Tess Runion.

My goal this week was to head out to the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge
and photograph some of the beautiful free-roaming bison and longhorn.

As a child, I remember the awe of seeing these wild giants sauntering next to the roadway
and I was excited to capture this experience again as an adult.
I don’t know if it was the weather or where I was looking
or if I just have a more grand childhood memory of the area than actually existed,
but the beasts were nowhere to be found.

And I couldn’t be more grateful.

I was forced to turn down more roads and walk more paths and discover areas and nature that I never knew existed out there.

On my drive out, I did finally find some longhorns and
one buffalo (despite his unsuccessful attempt to hide from me behind that tiny bush 😉 ).

After you read our story, follow the circle, starting with the gorgeous work of Tess Runion.

I can’t believe we waited this long to head to the local library.

It just so happens to be my childhood library, still located in the same building, but things have certainly changed!

I don’t remember this Under the Sea theme, cool computer games, or all of these fun reading chairs and couches.

This may have been our first visit, but it won’t be the last.  The kids and I all had a blast.
